12.5 DESIGNS

Bezier 12.5 - Prologue

The Herreshoff 12.5 was designed in the early 1900's to sail in the strong Southwest winds of Buzzards Bay near Cape Cod, Massachusetts where sea conditions are short and steep. This may be the reason it is also referred to as the Buzzards Bay 12.5. Newer versions constructed of fiberglass are referred to as the Doughfish 12.5.

A centerboard version of the Herreshoff 12.5 is the Haven 12.5. The Haven 12.5 was designed by Joel White around the middle 1980. The Haven 12.5 was designed to be constructed of wood holding true to the methods of construction used in Herreshoff's day. Plans for the Haven 12.5 are available today.

To illustrate the Bezier Curve Chine Construction method, metalsailboats.com has redesigned the Herreshoff 12.5 to be built from aluminum. As with the redesign of the Herreshoff 12.5 to the Haven 12.5, care has been taken in the redesign. The Bezier 12.5 holds true to the spirit and style of the original.
