The lines drawing is the most important drawing in the plans package. It represents a 3 dimensional object, the boats hull, in a 2 dimensional format. All the other drawings receive their information from this drawing.
The lines drawing is used to calculate all the properties of the hull, such as displacement, wetted surface, center of buoyancy, prismatic coefficients to name a few.

The above is a traditional version of the lines drawing created and used by Yacht Designers before the age of Computers. Sadly, the average boat builder will use it little. Lofting by the homebuilders is not required. All the information needed to construct the boat has been pulled from the lines drawing by Metalsailboats.com for you.
Reading the Lines Drawing
The lines drawing has three views:
Profile view - Top Left
Section view - Top Right
Plan view - Bottom Left
The major lines that profile the shape of the boat are the Sheerline, fairbody, keel and transom profile. Along with the lines that profile the hull there are (4) four major groups of curves that are used to define the boat hull in a two dimensional format. They are:
Waterlines - Green
Station Lines - Black
Buttocks Lines - Blue
Chine Lines - Magenta
A special waterline would be the Design waterline in Red
